Uganda's Mining and Minerals Act, 2022, mandates that mineral rights holders respect local communities, recognise their rights and customs, and contribute to community development . The Act also requires Community Development Agreements (CDAs) for mining operations . Mineral exploration is a multi-stage process that begins with prospecting and progresses to detailed assessment of mineral deposits. The timeline varies significantly depending on the target mineral, geological complexity, and accessibility of the area. In Uganda, the licensing framework provides clear timelines. A Prospecting Licence is issued for one year and allows preliminary assessment of mineral presence . If results are promising, an Exploration Licence can be obtained for up to four years, renewable once for an additional three years . The exploration phase involves geophysical, geological, and geochemical studies to determine whether a deposit is commercially viable .
